20/03/18 – 29/03/18 Pilot ‘Exploded View’ in Rome (IT), research on Via Appia
Exploded View is an art and research project looking at places of transition. The project focuses on the Ancient Via Appia in Rome, Italy, as compared to the ENCI-area (the area around the First Netherlands Cement Industry) in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Both places are complex, layered landscapes, presenting not only a historical dimension – vertical or horizontal (time and spatial layers), but also a social cohesion – determined by the people who are actively involved in the transformation process of the areas. This makes the landscapes complex and multi-layered, as a result of different perspectives and social use. The challenge in doing artistic research in these specific areas is to open up the landscapes, make them visible and experienceable through all layers, as in an exploded view.
